The film opens when Paul (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a young idealist, completes his military service and meets aspiring pop singer Madeleine (Chantal Goya). Despite marked differences in musical taste and political leanings, the two soon become romantically involved. Paul’s quest for social and emotional fulfillment becomes more problematic as his relationship with Madeleine grows increasingly dysfunctional.
